EPIC Berhad Launches Advanced Gantry Cranes and Conveyor Belt at Kemaman Port to Boost Efficiency and Capacity
15 Jun 2024

EPIC Berhad is pleased to announce the official operations launch for two new gantry cranes and a conveyor belt at the East Wharf, Kemaman Port, marking yet another significant advancement to substantially enhance port handling efficiency and capacity. The inauguration ceremony, held yesterday, was officiated by Terengganu Incorporated Sdn Bhd (Terengganu Inc) President and Group Chief Executive Officer Haji Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed @ Harun as well as EPIC Berhad Director and Konsortium Pelabuhan Kemaman Sdn Bhd (KPKSB) Chairman YB Datuk Haji Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim.

These two new cranes, which began operating on 5 May 2024 and are expected to elevate the port capacity from 4 million metric tons (MT) per year to 7 million MT per year, have already shown a transformative impact on port activities, boasting cargo handling capacity three times higher than traditional ship cranes. As a result, vessel berthing period is now reduced threefold, thus increasing port throughput, cutting turnaround time, and improving overall port productivity.

Spanning 8.2 kilometers, the conveyor belt, which was completed in April, now seamlessly connects Kemaman Port to Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd’s (ESSB) factory. This infrastructure upgrade optimises cargo transport, ensuring smoother operations between the port and the manufacturing facility.

The event also received distinguished guests, including ESSB Director Dato' Tee Choon Hock and Eastern Steel Material Handling Sdn Bhd (ESMH) Director Dato' Ong Chong Sek. Their presence underscored the robust support and collaboration following last year's partnership between KPKSB and ESMH to provide and maintain two additional wharf cranes at the East Wharf.

Speaking at the event, Port Management and Marine Services Senior General Manager Haji Ashari Mohammad shared that the Group has embarked on a transformative journey to bolster its port facilities, and the strategic partnership with ESMH is pivotal in supporting its operations to meet the growing demand for logistics services there. EPIC Group Chief Executive Officer Ts. Haji Muhtar Suhaili, on the other hand, congratulated the entire team on the launch and emphasised that it is a critical component of a broader expansion strategy.

Also in attendance were Kemaman Port Authority Senior Manager Dato' Asmawi Nordin and EPIC Group Chief Financial Officer Encik Wan Mohd Azilah Wan Abdullah.

Looking ahead, EPIC Berhad has ambitious plans to further augment its infrastructure, benefiting both its current and future potential customers. In the coming years, the Group anticipates the installation of four additional Level-Luffing Cranes at the East Wharf. These new cranes will further elevate the port's handling capabilities to 12 million MT per year, solidifying EPIC Berhad's position as a leading player in the industry.
